Our Mini Cow Ownership Guide is designed to help new and experienced owners confidently care for their miniature cattle. While mini cows are smaller and easier to manage than standard cattle, they still require proper housing, nutrition, and daily care.

Space requirements📏

Half an acre to one acre of usable pasture per mini cow for grazing, or a quarter acre per head in a dry lot with hay supplied. Two or three rotating paddocks beat one open field. Fencing should be woven wire, three-rail, or well-maintained electric at nose height for a short animal.

Companionship🐄

Mini cows are herd animals. Plan on two, or on a horse, donkey, or goat companion at minimum. A lone mini cow bawls, paces, tests fences, and loses condition. We will not place a single animal into an empty pasture.

Shelter🏡

A three-sided run-in with a dry floor and a wind break is enough almost everywhere. In hot regions, prioritize shade and airflow over walls. Highlands tolerate deep cold with no trouble at all.

🌿Feeding Needs

Roughly 2 to 2.5% of body weight in dry matter daily — about 12 to 18 pounds of grass hay for a typical mini. Free-choice loose cattle mineral, always-available clean water, and grain only as a training tool. Obesity is the number one health problem in pet mini cattle.

🪮Grooming Needs

Brush weekly, more during the spring shed. Grooming is also your health check: you will find ticks, lice, cuts, and weight changes with your hands long before you see them from across the field. Horned animals need occasional horn checks for cracks.

🩺Health care

Annual vaccinations, deworming based on fecal counts rather than a calendar, hoof trimming every 6 to 12 months, and a large-animal vet on file before your calf arrives. Budget a few hundred dollars a year per animal for routine care.

    Are Mini Highland cows good pets?
    Yes, when they are handled daily from birth. Our calves are halter broken, brushed, and led before they leave the ranch, so they arrive already comfortable with people. They are still livestock and need pasture, fencing, and a companion animal — but a well-raised Mini Highland is as calm and affectionate as a large dog.

    Do mini cows stay small?

    A mini cow keeps growing until roughly three years old, then holds its mature frame. Standard miniatures finish at 36 to 42 inches at the hip and micro minis stay under 36 inches. We measure and record hip height on every animal we sell so you know what you are buying before you commit.

    What do mini cows eat?
    Grass and quality hay make up the bulk of the diet — roughly 2 to 2.5 percent of body weight in dry matter per day, which is about 12 to 18 pounds of hay for a typical mini. Add free-choice loose minerals, clean water at all times, and only a small ration of grain for training or condition. Mini cattle gain weight easily, so overfeeding is a far more common mistake than underfeeding.

    How long do mini cows live?
    Expect 18 to 25 years. Mini Highlands routinely reach their early twenties, and Mini Jerseys and Mini Herefords commonly live 18 to 22 years. Buying a mini cow is a two-decade commitment, which is exactly why we screen homes and stay available for the life of the animal.
    Can mini cows live with horses?
    They can, and many of our buyers keep them that way. Introduce them across a fence line for a week first, feed separately so the cow does not eat the horse’s grain, and keep in mind that horse feed containing monensin is toxic to cattle. Horned cattle should be watched carefully during the first few turnouts together.
    Do mini cows need another cow?
    They need a companion, and another bovine is by far the best one. Cattle are herd animals and a solitary mini cow becomes stressed, loud, and prone to fence testing. A second mini, a steer buddy, or in some cases a horse, donkey, or goat can fill the role — we will not sell a single animal into an empty pasture.

    How big do Micro Mini Highland cows get?
    Micro mini Highlands mature under 36 inches at the hip and generally weigh 350 to 500 pounds. Many of ours finish between 30 and 34 inches. They still need real fencing and shelter, but they are small enough for one person to halter, groom, and load without help.

    Are Mini Highland cows friendly?
    Temperament is roughly half genetics and half handling. We only breed from parents with proven quiet dispositions, and every calf is touched daily from its first week. The result is cattle that walk up to be scratched rather than backing into a corner.

    Are miniature cattle easy to care for?
    For anyone comfortable with basic livestock chores, yes. Daily water and hay, a mineral check, a shelter to get out of weather, annual vaccinations, hoof trimming every 6 to 12 months, and periodic deworming cover most of it. Their size makes every one of those tasks safer and simpler than with full-size cattle.

    How much land do I need for mini cows?

    A 30 percent deposit reserves your calf and takes it off the available list. It is refundable once the animal is held for you, and it is also fully transferable to another available calf if your circumstances change before pickup.

    Can mini cows be milked?
    Mini Jerseys are the reliable choice for a family milk cow, giving roughly one to three gallons daily on a once-a-day milking schedule. Mini Highlands can be milked but produce far less, typically under a gallon. Any milk cow needs to freshen — that is, calve — before she will produce.

    When are calves available and how far out is the waitlist?
    We calve in spring and fall and keep the program small on purpose, so most seasons sell out ahead of weaning. Micro minis and unusual colors typically have the longest wait. Joining the waitlist costs nothing and gives you first look at each new calf before it is listed publicly.
